Thomas Takamitsu Kakinuma (1908 – 1982) was born in Tanuma-shi. Tochigi-Ken, Japan. He attended painting classes in Tokyo at the Wased University 1936, and immigrated to Vancouver in 1937. After the war he attended the Ontario College of Art and graduated in 1947, moved to New York, and joined the Art Students League and continued his painting studies until 1950. He returned to the Ontario College of Art and studied ceramics for one year before returning to Vancouver, where he took up ceramics in earnest. He became a beloved teacher, and taught at the Huts, on and off from 1956 to 1969. Kakinuma won the Grand Award for Stoneware, in the Canadian Ceramics 1957, and his work was selected for the Canadian Pavilion in the Universal and International 1958 Exhibition in Brussels, Belgium. In 1963 he was awarded the silver medal in the International Exhibition of Ceramics in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He lived and maintained a successful studio in Burnaby.
