Glenn Lewis, Vancouver, A medium-sized bowl (042221), porcelain, woodfired, 2021. Orange-pink shino glazed inside, white and pink outside with grey patches, iron black spotted throughout, cut fool, “GL” chop, “f” studio. 7 ¼ inches wide and 3 ¾ inches high.
Glenn Lewis graduated from the Vancouver School of Art in 1958, and on John Reeve’s recommendation, apprenticed at the Leach Pottery from 1961 to 1963, taught Gathie Falk and Charmian Johnson at UBC in 1965-66. From 1967 to 1973, he was a member of Vancouver’s art collective Intermedia, and directed the artist-run centre Western Front, 1975-84, and he was Head of Media Arts Section at the Canada Council between 1987–90. His art practice includes installation using ceramics, collage, drawing, found material, performance, video, and photography. He has done residencies at Bizen and Shigaraki, the Leach Pottery, Medalta, and Jingdezhen. He received the Governor General Award for Visual Arts in 2017.
