Gordon Hutchens, Vase with Gold and blue crystalline glaze, 5” dia x 6” 12.6 x 15.2 cm
Gordon Hutchens was born in Champlain, IL. He earned his BFA from the University of Illinois, where he studied ceramics and glass-blowing. He immigrated to Canada in 1973, establishing his pottery and home on Denman Island by the mid 70s. He is reknowned for his artistic and technical expertise in a range of ceramic firing and glazing protocols, including crystaline glazes. He has taught across North America and, since 1999, has taught at the North Island College on Vancouver Island. He has exhibited extensively in Canada, the US, and Japan and is an original and on-going member of the collective “Fired Up: Contemporary Works in Clay.” In 2019 Gordon was honoured by the BC Achievement Foundation as the recipient of the Carter Wosk Award of Distinction.
