Julie York lives in Vancouver, where she is an Associate Professor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She received her BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and her MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Subsequently, she held fellowships and residencies at the Clay Studio, Philadelphia; the International Ceramic Research Centre, Guldagergaard, Denmark; and the Shigaraki Cultural Park, Japan. York received a Pew Fellowship in the Arts, the Independence Foundation Fellowship, and two Creative Production Grants from the Canada Council for the Arts. Her work has been included in shows nationally and internationally. Her work is also part of numerous permanent collections including those at the Racine Art Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her current work and research explores the role of architecture and the perception of space through both two and three-dimensional images and objects. The work incorporates the language of architecture to examine the relationship between real and perceived notions of space.
