Description
Martin Peters, Jug, stoneware, 9 inches tall
Martin Peters attended the Kootenay School of Art, studying under Walter Dexter and Francis Hatfield. Between 1972 and 1974, he apprenticed with Michael Henry at Slug Pottery. Between 1974 and 1975, he apprenticed at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives with Bernard Leach, Janet Leach, Bill Marshall and John Reeve. He worked with John Reeve at the Cold Mountain Pottery between 1975 and 1978, after which he attended law school and worked in law in Toronto. He worked in the Crawford Street Pottery and the Rosedale Pottery, both in Toronto, prior to coming to Vancouver. Since 2006, Martin has operated the Dunbar Pottery in Vancouver with Ron Vallis. Inspired by medieval jugs and English slipware, and, following in the Leach tradition, Peters uses Japanese glazes on English and Canadian forms to create a fusion of east and west.
